KEN LUDWIG’S COMEDIC ROMP LEADING LADIES |
|
wo British actors find themselves in the most peculiar and most opportune roles of their careers and their lives when they plan to dupe a millionaire out of her fortune. Outrageous comedy abounds when the swindle goes wrong in LEADING LADIES by Ken Ludwig. The local premiere of this screwball comedy opens May 21 at Bus Barn Stage Company and runs through June 13.
Down-on-their-luck actors Jack and Leo find themselves in need of a payday. Not even able to hold together a performance at a Moose Lodge, the British actors find inspiration in a newspaper article advertising a dying woman’s wish to reunite with her long lost relatives to whom she will leave her vast fortune. A chance encounter with a well connected bombshell on roller-skates uncovers the only problem with their plan to pose as the wealthy lady’s next of kin: the assumed “nephews†are actually nieces!
Bus Barn Stage Company’s local premier of LEADING LADIES is directed by Suzanne Sturn. An all-star cast includes Kurt Gravenhorst and Ken Boswell as Jack and Leo, Heidi Kobara, Robyn Winslow, Beverley Griffith, Jim Mantell, Taylor Smith, and Patrick Bridges.
Called a “highly combustible and continuously hilarious new comedy†LEADING LADIES is sure to make “sophisticated and reasonable men and women of the 21st century cackle till their faces hurt.†Don’t miss the last show of the 08/09 season as this local premiere of LEADING LADIES hits the Bus Barn stage! |

Teatro Visión Brings Best-Selling Book to Life This Spring in West Coast Premiere of Bless Me Ultima |
|
Teatro Visión returns to the stage this Spring with the West Coast Premiere of a stage adaptation of Rudolfo Anaya’s classic novel, Bless Me, Ultima.
Directed by Teatro Visión Artistic Director Elisa Marina Alvarado and presented in English with Spanish subtitles, the play will run March 17 – April 3, 2011 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San José.
Bless Me, Ultima is a coming of age story of Antonio, a six-year- old boy growing up in rural New Mexico during World War II. Ultima, a kindly curandera, or traditional healer, befriends Antonio and helps him discover the magic and mysteries of the plains surrounding his village. When Ultima confronts a greedy and murderous villager she is accused of being a witch. Though her life is in danger she shows Antonio that ‘God’ lives in the brave acts of helping others.
When published in 1972, critics proclaimed the book a new and refreshing offering to Chicano/Latino literature. It was awarded the Premio Quinto Sol Award for best Chicano novel and was also selected for The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts that propelled the book to further popularity. “It had a huge influence on me,†mentioned Director Elisa Marina Alvarado, “the book spoke of our world as [as Chicanos], where questions about the tensions between indigenous and Catholic worldviews were constantly raised. The book inspired many in my generation to bring to the stage the complex Chicano experience.†Its legacy continued last year with the stage adaptation, written by Anaya, that premiered at the Vortex Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March of 2010. Shooting for a film adaptation also concluded this past December in New Mexico. |
